Succesfull building of hydraulic installation

The Danish shipyard Vestvaerftet has designed and built the fishing vessel Ocean Crest. The ship was built for the Irish Sheehy family and is based in Skibbereen, which is a small town with only 2,000 inhabitants located in the south of Ireland.

The ship is 27 meter long and 9 meter wide and outfitted for trawl fishing and fly shooting.

Hydraulic installation at the local shipyard Vestværftet

Early in the project phase, AS SCAN was contacted by the yard to discuss the possibilities of a collaboration where we had to install and test hydraulic equipment supplied by Irish SeaQuest. A dialogue that resulted in a good and constructive collaboration.

After several months of intensive work of installing more than 1,300 meters of hydraulic pipes, valves, hydraulic pumps etc., we have now installed and tested the ship's hydraulic system. All this took place in parallel with the shipyard and its subcontractors equipping the vessel with other technical equipment.

Flyshooter/trawler hydraulic deck equipment

All hydraulic tubes, on working deck and weather deck, were made of stainless steel. The hydraulic equipment among others include:

  • 2 x 32 ton trawl winches
  • 2 x 16 ton net drums
  • 1 x 4 ton net sounder winch
  • 1 x 5 ton out haul winch
  • 1 x 12 ton gilson winch
  • 1 x 2.5 ton anchor winch
  • 2 x 25 ton rope reels
  • 2 x 1.5 ton crane
  • 1 of fish hose reels
  • 1 x trawl gallow to move the wire blocks transversely

Furthermore, AS SCAN has also delivered a complete steering system containing an MT3500 steering gear and control system. The steering gear in operated by two cylinder pistons, which is also called a piston-type steering gear - a reliable and secure solution.

The ship has now sailed home to Ireland, where it fishes from the southern Irish fishing port of Baltimore.

Thank you to the Sheehy family for positive cooperation during the entire project.
