Hot water electrode boiler

A PARAT hot water electrode boiler converts electricity into heat for district heating networks and industrial heating systems. Supplied by AS SCAN, the range offers outputs up to 60 MW and supply voltages of 6–24 kV.

This industrial hot water boiler combines a compact design with rapid load adjustment, allowing heat production to respond to changing demand and electricity availability.

Efficient heat production without combustion

The boiler generates heat by passing electric current through water between electrodes. With efficiency close to 100%, almost all the electrical energy supplied is converted into heat.

Electric operation produces no combustion-related CO₂ or NOx emissions at the boiler and requires no flue or chimney for exhaust gases. The carbon footprint of heat production depends on the electricity used.

Flexible power-to-heat operation

As a district heating hot water boiler, the PARAT unit can supplement existing heat sources and convert surplus electricity into useful heat.

Its fast power regulation allows operators to adjust electricity consumption as conditions change. PARAT specifies a response time of less than 30 seconds, making the boiler relevant for applications requiring rapid load adjustment.

Combined with thermal storage, the system can produce heat during favourable electricity-price periods and store it for later use. The financial benefit depends on electricity prices, grid tariffs and the plant’s heat demand.

Support for grid balancing and demand response

An electrode boiler can provide a controllable electrical load for grid balancing and demand response. Participation depends on the requirements of the relevant market and the complete installation.
